West End House: Chinatown Soundscape
As part of the ongoing Artistic Risk series of videos we’re working on for TDC, Barr and the Klarman Foundations, Hairpin spent a day with the West End House. They let us tag along for their field trip to Chinatown. We filmed the artist-musician-archivists on their adventure collecting sound. The students set about recording everything from street noise, mahjong players and metal gates in the alley to water in the park. Lead by their teacher, Nick Tetrault, these kids are traveling around Boston collecting sound from different neighborhoods to create their own piece of music and build a samples library. It was great to watch Nick teach how to listen critically, to feel comfortable collecting material and and use the sophisticated recording gear. Nick’s got a great love of music and deep appreciation of his student’s creativity.
