Working for a healthier city

The Cambridge Public Health Department (CPHD)—like the vibrant, diverse, and slightly weird city it serves—is a hub of innovation. So it’s not surprising that CPHD has ingenious initiatives to promote healthy people and communities—from nurturing early childhood literacy to championing oral health. Our collaboration with CPHD and its numerous initiatives has resulted in strategic blueprints, compelling awareness campaigns, engaging brand identities, and dynamic print and digital collateral that bring Cambridge Public Health’s remarkable, inclusive vision to life.

Ready, set… refresh!

Hairpin led CPHD and its staff through a department-wide brand initiative as part of a national accreditation process. The challenge: How to convey the department’s unique status as both a department of the City of Cambridge and a part of the Cambridge Health Alliance, a regional health care system. In partnership with the CPHD team, Hairpin used surveys, interviews, in-person workshops, and our own analysis to clarify what sets CPHD apart, then used those findings as the foundation for a fresh messaging platform and visual identity.

Starting conversations

Let’s Talk! is a CPHD program to promote early literacy, encouraging parents to talk, sing, play, and interact with their children from birth onward. Inspired by the fun and welcoming approach of Let’s Talk!, Hairpin designed a playful awareness campaign to connect parents and caregivers to resources, community, and events. This included creating the contents of the care packages Let’s Talk! sends to the families of every newborn in Cambridge: onesies, bibs, bowls, magnets, and books and tips in multiple languages.

Building community

Cambridge Dads is a network of fathers and father figures committed to supporting each other, championing active parenting, and transforming the culture of Cambridge’s social services network to be more to fathers. For this CPHD initiative, we produced a visual brand identity that captures the camaraderie of this supportive community of dads.

Connecting to care

The Healthy Smiles initiative provides comprehensive and free oral health education and screenings to every student in Cambridge Public Schools, significantly improving the oral health of local children and their families. To increase awareness of these free resources, Hairpin designed family-focused campaign assets that helped spread the word.

Ensuring access

Pathways to Family Success is a vital support for low-income immigrant families living in Cambridge. This transformative program helps those families navigate this transition guiding parents through the public school system and linking them to essential resources. Through the Pathways program, CPHD helps foster connection with community events and activities for the whole family. To reflect CPHD’s commitment to the well-being of all Cantabrigians, Hairpin created a brand for the program, including a logo.
